Tex & the Horseheads were one of the most original and scene-defining bands to emerge from the early-’80s LA punk underground, helping define “cowpunk”—the collision of country twang, blues grit, and punk mayhem. At the center was Texacala Jones, a singular singer, songwriter, and performer whose vocals moved from sweetness to menace, humor to heartbreak, sultry to savage, with a through-line of soulful blues and a punk rock disregard for polite society.
Originally released in 1984, Tex and the Horseheads stands as a raw document of Los Angeles’ underground punk scene—equal parts unfiltered attitude, poetic grit, and outlaw country spirit. Fronted by the singular Texacala Jones, the band carved out a sound that blurred the lines between punk, blues, and rockabilly, earning a reputation for chaotic live shows and a fiercely independent ethos. Though the album became a cult favorite in physical form, it has remained largely inaccessible in the digital era—until now.
This long-overdue digital debut not only preserves a vital piece of L.A. music history, but reasserts Tex and the Horseheads as a foundational voice in the lineage of American underground music.
